Licensed Midwives for Nevada
Safety∙Accessbility
∙Accountability∙
∙Integration∙
Nevada may finally have the option for licensing Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) during the next legislative session. Licensing CPMs carries many benefits to both midwives and to the birthing people and families they serve.
CPM LICENSURE ACROSS THE STATES
37 states in the US offer licensure for Certified Professional Midwives.
5 states are planning CPM licensure bills.
5 states, including Nevada, have an active CPM licensure bill in their legislature.
Only 3 states in the US aren't currently working toward licensing CPMs.
BENEFITS OF LICENSURE
Accountability
A Licensed Midwife's accountability to their clients is all about establishing trust, striving to meet expectations, and committing to provide excellent and safe care guided by clear standards of care created for out of hospital birth.
Nevada families deserve safe care and the way that is achieved is when providers are held to high standards. A formal complaint process would be available to help improve the quality of care that families in our community receive.
Accessibility
Integration
Safety
Licensure for Certified Professional Midwives will open the opportunity for BIRTH CENTERS run by
Licensed Midwives in our communities!
The proposed Assembly Bill may also allow Licensed Midwives to accept Medicaid. Midwifery care should be available to all Nevada families.
Licensed Midwives would have easier legal access to life saving medications, lab and imaging accounts, as well as the potential for more consistent access to referrals to healthcare specialists.
Collaboration among health professionals can improve safety and quality, particularly when transferring from home to the hospital setting.
Research shows that when healthcare professionals collaborate and when coordination of care is seamless, fewer intrapartum deaths occur during critical obstetric events.
When midwives are effectively integrated into healthcare systems, outcomes for pregnant people and their newborns are improved.
